Hoop-Tober 2.0, Film 8 of 31:
The positives (small spoilers ahead)...
- gorgeous location/setting
- a poster for Christiane F. in the background of one scene
- very solid SFX
- the plane crash sequence was insanely well doneThe negatives (large spoilers ahead, sorry)...
- Roth turned a subject matter/genre that is in no way, shape or form funny and turned it into a ridiculous, tasteless joke (what the flying fuck was that diarrhea scene all about? yeah, it was sort of funny... even I laughed, but this was not a film that had any reason to contain such content; the goofier the film got, the more I lost interest in an idea that had, up until about the… -

there is a scene where a guy is jacking off in a cage surrounded by hundreds of cannibals and starts getting beaten up and continues to jack off while he's getting punched and its not even the worst part of the movie

I’ve seen this a handful of times now, but this is my first review of it and I’m so surprised at the low ratings for this! Like what the fuck y’all?
This is a loose remake/homage of Cannibal Holocaust and if you ask me it works pretty wonderfully. The scenario that leads the characters to their doom is much more appropriate for the times and the violence is actually more humane than the source inspiration so I’m sorry, how is this immature?
Is it because there are 2 separate scenes where they are locked in a cage and one has extreme diarrhea and the other start compulsively masturbating? Because if you think that’s immature then you clearly haven’t worked in…

Reading these two quotes from the movie will really give you the same experience that you would get sitting through the whole movie:
“Activism is so fucking gay”
“You really think the American government didn’t do 9/11, do you?”

Punishes these kids for armchair leftist do-gooderism despite their being willing to chain themselves to trees in the Amazon, and uses their well-intentioned transgressions against some natural order to freely indulge in the alleged monstrous savagery of a native peoples' exotic otherness. Tl;dr: a near-perfect facsimile of an Italian cannibal film, a strain of nastiness populated almost entirely by not-very-good movies primarily amusing for their dedication to supposedly scandalizing brutality. Anyway I'm a weirdo so the fealty to genre impresses me regardless of result. Roth remains an excellent slimeball provocateur.

Still laughing about how after these people literally watched one of their friends be mutilated and eaten, they were still TERRIFIED of that girl shitting near them. Like I promise that’s the least of your worries right now 😂
